Behind all this, some great happiness is hiding.~Yehuda Amichai

I woke up excited about the day ahead. It was a year after I’d left my job and a promising new way of life was taking shape.

I wrote for an hour at my big wooden desk in the morning light. With rich Castro coffee and a cat curled near my feet, I felt expansive and loved.

The promise of breakfast wafted through the house as I headed for the shower.

In the shower, an idea for a fun blog post series came to me, and I found myself singing an ABBA tune.

But then it hit me.

This is not normal. This can’t be right. Mama mia! I’ve been happy for too long this morning.

5 STUDY TRAPS I’VE SEEN OTHERS FALL INTO

You wouldn’t think there were many dangers to studying at uni.  I never thought so until I experienced it.  Trust me, there are dangers.

I fell into some traps myself, but I’ll tell you more about those in my next post.  For now, here are some of the traps that people around me fell into:

How To Memorize Anything

Unichat

October midterms are coming up. Some say if you can’t understand, just memorize. And to memorize, try the “stacking” method:

1. First, use a pencil or word processor (I prefer the latter because it’s faster) to type, in complete sentences, any fact you think might appear on the test. Use short sentences because they’re easier to remember. Take your printed notes into a quiet room, shut the door, and eliminate all distractions.

2. Look at the first sentence in your notes and read it out loud. Then, close your eyes and say the sentence without looking at it.

3. Repeat the step above, this time with the first 2 sentences.

4. Next, try it with 3 sentences.

Then 4.

5. Repeat until you have memorized every sentence in your notes.

The article also notes that completing the process twice (once more after taking a short nap) is also a good idea.

Freshmen Year

Posted on December 20th, 2014 by Bryanna Davis

This exciting journey was written by Meenakshi Das- a freshman student majoring in Accounting at Mississippi State University. She is an international student from Pune, India who enjoys reading, traveling and writing in her free time.

It was the 26th of July, 2014. I felt the velocity of the aircraft increasing from 0 miles to 10,000 miles as the plane took off. I saw the huge buildings changing into miniscule objects as I bid goodbye to my home to start a new life altogether. I couldn’t believe it! After two years of preparing for the entrance tests, spending a great deal of money on books, applications, battling for scholarships, I was finally embarking a journey towards my dream. My dream of pursuing bachelors in the United States finally came true.

Though a tinge of fear lingered inside my heart, I was pretty confident that I would manage well since I knew English. But this credence didn’t last for a long time. The first day of class was scary. I was in a totally different place, environment and culture for the first time in my life. When the realization hit me that I would have to spend four years of my life here, adrenaline rushed through my veins. But slowly, with the help of advisors and friends at Mississippi State University (MSU) , I became comfortable and today I enjoy my new home.

I feel blessed to be surrounded by so many kind people here at my university who go out of their way to help me!

Though there is so much advice and help available, the first semester of college is always confusing because there are so many things one wants to do. There are studies, numerous organizations, clubs, etc., and it can be difficult to cope with so much stuff. Here are a few things which I feel every new international student should do in their first semester of college. Of course, everybody has their own tastes and likings, but these things are what really made my first semester enjoyable!
